Firstly, if you haven't already got a domain name, spend time before purchasing a domain on what name name you want, as this will make your life easier in terms of search engine optimisation (SEO). Try to get the targeted keyword in the domain name. An example of a good domain name paulswindow-cleaning.co.uk. Straight away you know that its a window cleaning company and search engines will pickup on this when you start to put your content in.
Optimising your webpage
When your webpage is optimised you will see a drastic improvement in your ranking. You need to produce a straight forward content rich webpage with header tags (h1, h2, h3 tags) You want it to be apealing to your clientel as well as search engines. That's the tricky bit, because you want it to be a nice read for your customers as well as pleasing the search engines. With header tags, the h1 tag is the must relevant. Header tags act as keyword for the content. So use header tags wisely and makesure that the content within the first paragraph has the same keyword as the header tag, by doing this you're telling the search engines that this content is relevant. Remember don't just repeat the keyword over and over, the keyword should be between 2 - 4 percent of the web page. There's a variety of online tools that can check this for you. If it's over 4% it can be seen as spamming. Search engines also check on grammar, so don't just produce something poorly written.

Now your webpage is optimised, time to sort out the META Tags
- title tag
Place the title tag as close to the top of your web page as possible. Just after the doc type in the head section. It should be 100% relevant with the document between 10 - 64 characters including spaces and no stop words ie. if, and, so, but etc... Again theres plenty of free online tools to test for this. It should look like this:

Desciption should be 100% relevant with the document between 50 - 149 including spaces. It should look a little like this:
<meta name="description" content="Put description of website here that you want to display in search" />
Keywords. Google and other search engines have stopped looking at this meta tag, but other search engines do so I think if is still a good idea to add this meta tag. Because if you rank highly within other search engines it could make a differnce in you overall rankings. Keyword should be between 3 - 8 words sperated by a comma and be 100% relevant with the document. It should look like this:
<meta name="keywords" content="Place, the, keywords, here" />
You now have your website optimised for best performance within search engines, you want to build quality backlinks. You want link backs from websites that do similar thing that you do. You also can submit to business directories. You could consider writting articles, blogs, or even answering questions in forums. A little like this one.
